Highland Railway
The Highland Railway (HR) was a British railway company . The length of the route network in the north of Scotland was 814 km in 1923, the last year of operation. Their main route ran from Perth via Inverness to Wick and Thurso .
The nucleus of HR was the Inverness and Nairn Railway, founded in 1854 and opened on November 5, 1855 . In 1858 the line between Nairn and Keith was opened, which made a connection to the Great North of Scotland Railway and the rest of the British railway network. In 1865 it merged with the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway and the Perth and Dunkeld Railway to form the Highland Railway.
By 1884, HR took over several companies that had built the Kyle of Lochalsh Line and individual sections of the Far North Line :
- Inverness and Ross-shire Railway
- Sutherland Railway
- Dingwall and Skye Railway
- Duke of Sutherland's Railway
- Sutherland and Caithness Railway
In addition, HR built ten branches, all of which have now been closed. With the entry into force of the Railways Act 1921 , the HR went on January 1, 1923 in the London, Midland and Scottish Railway .
