State
British Rail was created in 1948 with the nationalization of the country's four large private railroad companies, the so-called "Big Four", and was gradually privatized and dissolved between 1994 and 1997.
The Big Four
With the Railways Act 1921 , most rail companies in the UK were (and some in Northern Ireland) combined into four companies, "The Big Four" ( the big four called). This measure came into force on January 1, 1923. The route lengths of the individual companies at this time are given in brackets.
