Hildegard Stücklen

Hildegard Alice Elisabeth Stücklen (born May 3, 1891 in Berlin ; † December 16, 1963 in Göttingen ) was a German-American physicist who dealt with spectroscopy .

Life

Stücklen, the daughter of the factory owner Hermann Stücklen, was Eduard Riecke's assistant and received her doctorate in 1919 from the Georg-August University in Göttingen under Robert Wichard Pohl on the subject of the question of the apparent shape of the sky . Then she went to Zurich, interrupted by a year in Delft (1921). In 1931 she completed her habilitation at the University of Zurich , where she was a private lecturer and went to the USA in 1934 . There she became an assistant professor at Mount Holyoke College, a women's college in South Hadley, Massachusetts, was a year at Caltech and from 1943 Associate Professor at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. In 1956 she retired, but extended another four years as chairman of the physics faculty at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. In the USA she worked with Hertha Sponer .
