biography

education and profession

Westphal studied geology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 1991 she spent a year at the University of Queensland studying abroad. From 1995 she did her doctorate at the GEOMAR research center of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . From 1998 she held a postdoc position at the Comparative Sedimentology Laboratory at the University of Miami . From 1999 to 2003 she was assistant professor at the University of Hanover and then went to Erlangen in 2003 for two years. Her habilitation followed in 2004 . From 1995 she worked for five years at the Marum of the University of Bremen . In 2010 she first became head of sedimentology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , but in the same year she moved to the ZMT Bremen as director . She was elected Vice President of the Leibniz Association in 2012 and confirmed in office in 2013.

Hildegard Westphal is married and has two children. She is a member of the Lions Club Bremen Roland.

research

Westphal deals with carbonate sediment as an archive of environmental and climate changes. She researches the deposits on the sea floor, from which, like in a kind of climate archive, certain environmental factors in long periods of earth's history such as sea level fluctuations, changes in ocean currents, water temperatures or those prevailing at the time can be read. This study of climatic fluctuations in the earth's history also enables a better understanding of the climatic changes in the modern and "now" times.
