The lake is located in Miami County about 50 km southwest of Kansas City . An earth dam dams Big Bull Creek.

Hillsdale State Park Recreation Area is on the lake . At the northeast end of the dam there is a visitor center for the US Army Corps of Engineers , who are responsible for the lake and its surroundings.
