The Iron Way is a five-hour-long mini-series . It was shot on behalf of ZDF in 1984 and broadcast in February 1985. The series takes place in the 30s and 40s of the 19th century against the backdrop of the construction of the first railways in Germany.

action

The young farmhand Veit Kolb from Hausberg in Bavaria loses his job with the farmer Kriele, who emigrates to America with his family. Engaged to the farmer's daughter, Veit wants to follow his Anna to America. In order to earn the money for the passage, Veit first hired himself as a forest worker before he went to build the railway with the day laborer Johannes . Since he failed several times to take a ship to America, Veit finally went to Prussia in 1847 to continue to work on the construction of railroad lines . After a workers' uprising, many of them are shot. Veit Kolb is sentenced to forced labor.

background

The five-part series was created on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the railway in Germany. Originally, Wolfgang Staudte directed it. In January 1984, however, Staudte died unexpectedly of heart failure while shooting outdoors in what was then Yugoslavia and was subsequently replaced by Hans-Werner Schmidt . In 1986 Bernd Schroeder for the book and Hans-Werner Schmidt for the direction were awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize with silver.
