The Marais des Cygnes River is a tributary of the Osage River in the east of the US state of Kansas and in the west of Missouri in the United States . By the Osage River and the Missouri River it belongs to the river system of the Mississippi River .
etymology
The name Marais des Cygnes comes from French and means march of the swans . It is probably derived from the trumpeter swan that is widespread in the region .
geography
The river is formed from Elm Creek and Hundred Forty Two Mile Creek north of Reading, Kansas. It flows southwest through the Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge and finally ends in Missouri in the Little Osage River, where it merges into the Osage River .
In Osage County , the river to Melvern Lake in Eisenhower State Park is dammed.
