The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute ( HMI ) ( German  Institute for Mountaineering in the Himalayas ) promotes mountaineering in the Himalayas .

history

The first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by the British Mount Everest Expedition with Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay aroused great interest in establishing mountaineering as an activity for the people in the region.

The HMI was founded on November 4th, 1954 by Jawaharlal Nehru , the first Indian Prime Minister , in Darjeeling , India and is also based there. The first director of the institute was Narendra Dhar Javal. Since December 17, 2018, the HMI has been headed by Jai Kishan, himself a former HMI graduate.

organization

Today the HMI is operated jointly by the Indian central government and the government of the state of West Bengal . The Chairman of the Executive Council is by virtue of the Indian Defense Minister ; his deputy is the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Other members of the Executive Council are, in addition to representatives from several Indian ministries from both the Central State and West Bengal, seven mountaineers and one representative each from the governments of Nepal and Bhutan .

The HMI has also had a museum since 1957 , in which the history of mountaineering in the Himalayas, including the development of equipment, is presented and objects related to art and culture from this area are exhibited.

target

The aim of the institute is to train new mountaineers for the Himalayas in India, who then practice this as a hobby, as a scientist or as a mountain guide.

The HMI regularly runs adventure , basic and advanced mountaineering courses , which are subsidized to promote mountaineering. During these extensive courses, in which 150 students can take part at the same time, they are accommodated in the HMI.

A library with 2,800 titles can be used in the HMI , mainly on mountain sports, but also on astronomy , flora and fauna . There is an indoor climbing wall in the institute. There are practice rocks in the immediate vicinity.
