The Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF, German Indian Mountaineering Foundation ) is the national association for mountaineering and related activities in India.
history
After the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by the British Mount Everest Expedition with Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay , interest in mountaineering was aroused in India . Founded in 1957 as a support committee for an expedition to Cho Oyu in the Himalayas , the area of responsibility was expanded to support expeditions to Mount Everest and later in the Himalayas in general. On January 5, 1961, the committee was transformed into what is now the Indian Mountaineering Foundation . It was officially registered on November 3rd, 1961. The IMF has been a UIAA member since 1981 . She is also a member of the International Federation of Sport Climbing . It is affiliated with the Indian regulatory body for sport climbing at the Olympic Games . The IMF has been holding competitions in sport climbing nationwide since 2018.

The IMF supports mountaineering , rock climbing , sport climbing and trekking by nationals and foreigners in the Indian part of the Himalayas.
The IMF is based in New Delhi . The current headquarters was inaugurated in 1980 by Indira Gandhi , Indian Prime Minister at the time. It includes a library with a reading room , an auditorium with 150 seats, 36 accommodation options, a two-story museum on the subject of the Himalayas and the development of mountaineering, and a sport climbing wall. The IMF organizes that weather reports for the Himalayas are read out on the radio and works with the Indian Air Force and other agencies to rescue mountain accidents and diseases.
The IMF organizes numerous expeditions to the Himalayas including Mount Everest . It arranges the necessary approval of the expedition from the Indian government for foreign expeditions and collects the fees to be paid for it.
She is active in the area of protecting the mountain world and imparting knowledge, in particular about the need for protection in the Himalayas.
IMF Mountain Film Festival
In 2017 the IMF organized the Mountain Film Festival under the direction of Maninder Kohli . Awards were given to short films (up to 20 minutes in length) that dealt with mountain sports or nature in the Himalayas. The award winners' films were shown on the IMF site in New Delhi.
