Sky (gainfarn)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sky near Großau / Gainfarn in the southern Vienna Woods is a gently sloping, approximately 2 km² large forest and meadow area in the rear valley of the Rohrbach or Aubach, which flows south of Bad Vöslau into the Triesting .

The hall (probably a sky -Flurname , arched, open corridor ') is a wide, open to the south and east of depression at an altitude from 450 to 500 meters. It got its name after its mild climate and the prevailing silence and is only accessible by a modern forest path (from Großau ) and a hiking path (from Pottenstein ). Because of the dark starry sky despite the proximity to Vienna, it was chosen as the starting point for astrogeodetic measurements of the Vienna test network , because the nearest city, Baden near Vienna , is almost 15 km away.

The neighboring corridors and hills also have unusual names: Wolfsgeist and Wolfsgeistberg, Gibisbühel, Herrgottskreuz, Totenkopf, Uhrhauswald and Schöpfeben . The only thing that disturbs the idyll is the power line from Wien-Auhof to the south, which was built in the 1960s against some resistance.

The sky is also suitable as a starting point for near-natural hikes: it lies at the foot of the Hohen Lindkogel ( 834  m ), the striking Peilstein (its west face is a climbing garden) and the town of Schwarzensee are only 3–4 km away, and half as far as the refuge the Nordwiener Hütte .
