Museum ship "Hindenburg" put into service in 1944, former motor lifeboat MRB Hindenburg of the DGzRS

The Hindenburg (internally also Hindenburg IV ) with the DGzRS identification KRA 101 is a former motor lifeboat of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS). The steel construction boat was launched in 1944 at the August Pahl shipyard on Köhlfleet in Hamburg; it was put into service that same year.

The name Hindenburg had previously been borne by three other DGzRS motor rescue boats: Hindenburg [I] (1925–1932), Hindenburg [II] (1937–1940) and a boat of the 13 m class built in 1942, which was sold in 1944 in Ulrich Steffens (II) was renamed and was given the name Spiekeroog in 1947 .

Ship data

The motor lifeboat Hindenburg had two engines with 150 hp each as drive sources and was accordingly equipped with two screws. With this the Hindenburg reached a speed of approx. 10 knots.

Use at the DGzRS

During the last phase of the war, the Hindenburg, like all larger units of the DGzRS, was used for search and rescue services. From December 22nd, 1944, Peter Hartmann took over as foreman and captain of the largest and most modern rescue boat of the DGzRS at the time. A total of 800 people were saved with the Hindenburg .

The boat was stationed at four locations, one after the other:

  • Cuxhaven: December 22, 1944 - June 13, 1958
  • Dithmarschen: June 14, 1958 - April 10, 1960
  • List (island of Sylt): June 22, 1960 - July 14, 1969
  • North Beach: July 15, 1969 - January 1979

Museum ship

March 30, 1979, the boat went to the conveyance of the Kiel Maritime Museum over and belongs to Maritime Museum since 1981 Kiel . The Hindenburg is located on the museum bridge of the Kiel Maritime Museum .

Repair

After modifications to the ship's superstructure in the 1960s, the last repairs to its current condition were carried out at the Laboe shipyard; The repair required a 6-month construction period due to the complex work and financing also from donors and sponsors.
