The Hindenburg Street is a city road in Hamburg in the districts Winterhude , Alsterdorf and Gross Borstel .

Hindenburgstrasse begins on the northern edge of Hamburg's city park at the intersection of Otto-Wels-Strasse and Jahnring .

It runs in a straight line near the western border of City Nord to the police headquarters , the Alsterdorf underground station and the freight bypass train . It crosses the Alster with the Hindenburgbrücke and then crosses the Maienweg , where it ended until the 1950s. It was later extended to Alsterkrugchaussee and in 1979 to Obenhauptstrasse in an industrial area south of Hamburg Airport .

Until September 16, 2013, Hindenburgstrasse began on the southern edge of the city park at the intersection with Südring and Borgweg . This section was then renamed Otto-Wels- Strasse.

Several bus lines of the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund use the road.

Naming

It is named after the German General Field Marshal and President Paul von Hindenburg .

The Lokstedter Steindamm in the districts of Eppendorf and Lokstedt was also called Hindenburgstrasse. However, as a result of the renaming under the Greater Hamburg Act, it was given its original name again.

There have been repeated attempts to rename the street, most recently in November 2012. The Hamburg-Nord district assembly decided on February 14, 2013 to rename at least the southern part of the street to Otto-Wels-Straße.
