Otto-Wels-Strasse
The Otto-Wels-Straße is a city road in Hamburg's district Winterhude and crosses the Hamburg city park. It was formerly called Hindenburgstrasse.
course
The street begins at the southern end of the Hamburg city park , at the intersection of the streets Borgweg and Südring .
It crosses the city park in a curved course and cuts its main axis vertically. In the city park are the Landhaus Walter , the protected Sierichsche Forsthaus and the Hamburg Planetarium on Otto-Wels-Straße. This section was used for the city park races, of which a deepened lane edge in the curve to the western Südring testified until the 1980s.
The street ends at the junction with the Jahnring ; after crossing it, it becomes Hindenburgstraße .
Namesake
The street is named after the SPD politician Otto Wels , who argued against the so-called “ Enabling Act ” of the National Socialists in the last free speech in the Reichstag on March 23, 1933 and justified the rejection by the SPD.
Otto-Wels-Straße used to be the southern part of Hindenburgstraße and was renamed on September 16, 2013.
