The menhir (also: Hünenstein ) is menhir in Darmstadt .

Location and description

In front of the old city wall of Darmstadt there are several granite boulders of different sizes . The largest boulder - the so-called menhir - was integrated into the kitchen area of the house at Hinkelsgasse 15 . In 1912 the menhir was partly blown away. The house at 15 Hinkelsgasse was completely destroyed in an air raid on September 23, 1943 .

Monument protection

The menhir , which is clearly visible from the street, gave the narrow Hinkelsgasse and the Hinkelsturm their name. For reasons of city history, the Hinkelstein is a cultural monument .

The menhir today

The approx. 3 m long menhir is now a monolith in the green area in front of the men’s tower . The Hinkelsgasse no longer exists today.
