Hinrek van Alkmer
A Hinrek van Alckmer has survived only in the prose introduction to Reynke de vos, which was printed in Lübeck in 1498 . In later reprints of this edition it also appeared as Alkmar , Alckmaar or, more rarely, Alcmair ; Since the 18th century the spelling Alkmer was preferred.
According to the information in the aforementioned introduction, he was the schoolmaster and breeding teacher of the Duke of Lorraine and, at his request, translated the story of the fox - meaning the Roman de Renart - from French into German. According to Jacob Grimm , he is possibly identical with the Hendrik van Alkmaar mentioned in Utrecht documents from 1477 and 1481 , who “with Philippa von Egmond , the daughter of Duke Adolf von Geldern , who in 1485 married Renate II , Duke of Lorraine, in Lorraine services and the ducal children born since 1486 were admitted as teachers ”. According to Grimm, he had divided the Flemish “ Reinaert ” into four books and provided it with a prose, which was in “ Reinke ” in Low German.
