Hipódromo San Fernando was a hippodrome that was also used as a football stadium and had space for 8,000 visitors. Connected to the grandstand were three restaurants and a dance hall, where important social celebrations took place. The hippodrome was located in Itagüí , an industrial suburb of Medellín . From the opening season in 1948 until the game year 1952 , it served as the home ground of the first division football teams from Medellín after the introduction of the Colombian professional football championship .

history

The football field of the Hipódromo San Fernando, which existed from 1942 to 1960, was opened on January 5, 1944. Because there were horse races in the afternoon , the soccer games had to be played in the morning, and because the venue was in a very remote location at the time, most fans had to travel by bus. The last championship game took place on December 8, 1952 between Atlético Nacional and Millonarios FC and ended 2-2. The teams from Medellín have been using the newly built Estadio Atanasio Girardot as their home ground since 1953 . After the hippodrome was demolished, the central supply station (La Central Mayorista) of Antioquia was built on the same site in 1971 and has since served as a fruit and vegetable market.
