Hippocles
Hippocles is an ancient Athenian from the 4th century BC. BC, about which information is still known today thanks to several inscriptions .
In 1961, in Grammatiko , a town in Attica , related fragments of a relief-decorated inscription stele in honor of Hippocles were found, which were made in 332/331 BC. Was built. Accordingly, Hippocles was the son of Demokles and, like his father, came from an Attic Demos Eitea . Whether it was Eitea in the Phyle Akamantis or in the Phyle Antiochis is not clear from the inscription. Hippocles was publicly honored for his services to the demos, for his arete (virtue) and his justice. In addition to the honoring stele that was set up in the sanctuary of the Basile (or Basileia) of the demos, he received a golden wreath worth 500 drachmas, which is probably represented in the relief of the stele: a female figure wreaths a smaller, bearded man, who probably represents the honored Hippocles and who raised his right arm as a gesture of adoration .
Hippocles presumably had a daughter named Samakion, whose grave was in the last quarter of the 4th century BC. BC on the burial road of Kerameikos in Athens. The grave stele erected for them , the inscription of which also names a Hippocles from Eitea, has been preserved to this day.
