Hippoliet Van Peene

Hippoliet Jan Van Peene (born January 1, 1811 in Kaprijke , East Flanders , † February 19, 1864 in Ghent ) was a Flemish doctor and playwright.

life and work

Hippoliet Jan Van Peene studied medicine in Leuven and established himself as a doctor in Ghent in 1837. As a student, he wrote the French vaudeville La vieillesse de Stanislas , which was performed in 1835, for the dramatic society Broedermin en Taalyver , which he had founded. His first Flemish original work, Keizer Karel en de Berchemsche boer , which was also the first Flemish vaudeville written since 1830, had an unusual success when it was performed in Ghent in 1841. Since then, the poet has tirelessly created dramatic pieces of all kinds for the Flemish theater, many of which have been crowned by prize competitions, such as: B. the opera Brigitta (1847), the Vaudeville Een domme vent (1848), the drama Jan de Vierde (1848) and others, and which mostly belonged to the standing repertoire of the Flemish theater. Peene also wrote the lyrics of the Flemish national anthem De Vlaamse Leeuw in 1847 , to which Karel Miry wrote the music. A complete edition of his works was published in Ghent (38 vols., 1880–82).
