Hippolyte Havel

Hippolyte Havel (born August 13, 1871 in Tábor , Czech Republic , † 1950 in New Jersey ) was a Czech anarchist and close friend of Emma Goldmans .

Hippolyte Havel lived in Greenwich Village , a borough of New York , where shortly before the First World War he opened a restaurant that became a meeting place for artists and intellectuals.

In 1900 he accompanied Goldman to Paris to prepare for the international anti-parliamentary congress that will take place in September. He wrote for Mother Earth , among others, and was editor of The Revolutionary Almanac (1914) and Revolt magazine (1916).

Havel was married to Polly Holliday and adopted Berenice Abbott in 1918 . He wrote biographies on Voltairine de Cleyre and Emma Goldman as well as an introductory essay for Goldman's collection Anarchism and Other Essays .
