Hiren's BootCD (HBCD for short) was a live system bootable from CD or USB sticks , which was based on an adapted "Mini Windows XP " ( Windows PE ) and the GRUB4DOS boot manager . In addition, the Linux distribution Parted Magic was offered at the start. The last version is from 11/2012, an adapted version for Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 has not yet been published.

The main goal is to rescue or restore defective Microsoft Windows systems. Furthermore, it offers numerous possibilities for data recovery , backup and forensics . The software is recommended as an irreplaceable " Swiss Army Knife " for PC maintenance and is one of the most frequently downloaded software in download portals.

description

The CD has been continuously developed since the beginning of the 2000s. Version 5 was published in 2004, version 15 at the end of 2011. Only the title of their website “Hiren & Pankaj” is known about the authors.

Hiren's BootCD is currently (2013) a reference for live rescue systems, similar to rescue CDs such as Knoppix or Bart PE , but with four to six times the scope of the program. Technically, it is based on a Linux live system, but is geared towards Windows systems and is able to read and write to the NTFS file system. Furthermore, the complete system offers a variety of portable software that offers comprehensive help with the administration of a Windows system.

The collection of freeware and shareware programs is available for inspection on the official website.

There are numerous derived projects ( forks ) that extend the program package as a basic version.

Licensing problems

Prior to version 11.0, Hiren's BootCD included several commercial programs including Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost , Acronis Disk Director, and Paragon Partition Manager. Before starting any of these programs, the user had to confirm that they had a valid license, but no further verification took place.
