Hiroaki Terao

Hiroaki Terao ( Japanese 寺 尾 宏 明 , Terao Hiroaki ; born August 13, 1951 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese mathematician specializing in algebra.

Life

He made university degrees in 1974 and 1976 at the University of Tokyo and another in 1981 at the University of Kyoto . From 1977 to 1991 he worked as a mathematician at the International Christian University, a private university in Mitaka . He then worked at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , from 1993 to 1999 as a professor. At the same time he held a professorship at the University of Hokkaidō from 1996 to 1998 . From 1998 to 2006 he was a professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University . Since 2006 he has been a professor at the University of Hokkaidō again. There he was dean from 2013 to 2015 and has also been vice president there since 2015.

Foreign research activities took him to the Mittag-Leffler Institute in 1992 and to the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in 1995 and to the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in 1997 and 2004 .

Terao's guess

Terao first made a conjecture in 1983 that turned out to be a milestone in her field and resulted in extensive research. It relates to arrangements of hyperplanes and says that the freedom of the module of the derivations is a purely combinatorial property of its intersection. To date, however, it has not been possible to provide complete or counter-evidence. Some of the details examined confirmed the suspicion. However, further investigated details are not in accordance with the assumption, so that its universal validity is now questioned and it is more of a special case.
