from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hirth HM 501 is a German aircraft engine from the Second World War .

development

The HM 501 appeared in 1939 at the same time as the HM 500 as its six-cylinder version and as the successor to the HM 506 A , which it replaced. From it, the structure unit with cylinders was crank drive and control over, the mold was changed the crankcase of electron having a closed tunnel shape with pressed-in bearing rings for crank and camshaft received. In addition, the oil tank, which was previously located inside the housing, was moved to the outside and all add-on parts were placed on the rear of the engine to reduce the front resistance. The HM 501 did not go into series production because the aviation industry did not develop suitable aircraft types for the performance class it covered. As a test, it was installed in a Fw 44 and also served as a drive for the Ar 231 .

construction

The HM 500 is an air-cooled six-cylinder , four-stroke , in- line engine with single-row suspended cylinders , automatic ignition and fresh oil dry sump lubrication . Starting can be carried out both electrically and manually.
