Hirth HM 60 R

The Hirth HM 60 is an air-cooled aircraft engine with a displacement of 3.6 liters from Hirth Motoren GmbH in Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen . It was mainly used in light aircraft of the 1920s and 1930s. With a displacement of 4 liters, the more powerful Hirth HM 504 followed in 1934 .

development

The first version of the HM 60, developed by Hellmuth Hirth together with his designer Haensgen, appeared in 1931. The engine was installed in a Klemm L 25 and flown by Hellmuth's brother Wolf Hirth on the 1931 flight to Germany from August 11 to 16 , which was able to take second place on the long-distance flight of 2192 kilometers. The more powerful versions HM 60 R and HM 60 R 2 appeared in 1933 and 1934 respectively.

construction

The four-cylinder , four-stroke , in- line engine with a displacement of 3.6 liters has cylinders arranged in a suspended manner ; H. the crankshaft is on top. The cylinder of cast iron with attached heads from an aluminum alloy are with through bolts in the two-part ventilated crankcase of electron secured. Each cylinder is equipped with one inlet and one outlet valve, which is controlled via angle levers, push rods and tappets by two camshafts mounted between cylinders 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 . The pistons are cast from light metal, the connecting rods with an H-shaped cross-section are made from chrome-nickel steel and have roller bearings . The crankshaft, which is also mounted on roller bearings, has a Hirth spur gear . As is usual with aircraft engines, the HM 60 was equipped with dry sump lubrication and double ignition . The two spark plugs in each cylinder are fed by a high-voltage magnetic and battery ignition system .
