The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame is a horse museum in Goshen , New York . The museum collects and researches the history of harness racing and serves as the Hall of Fame for the American Standardbred . The museum opened in 1951, during Goshen's Hambletonian Stake era.

Orange County

Orange County is the birthplace of Hambletonian 10 , the progenitor of the American Standardbred Trotter. Between 1930 and 1956, the important Hambletonian Stakes (endowed with $ 1,000,000 in 2015) were held in Goshen on the Good Time Park Mile Track .

Historic Track

Close to the Harness Racing Museum is the Historic Track , a historic harness racing track that's half a mile long and has been a National Historic Landmark since May 1966 . In October 1966, it was entered as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places . Also, the Racetrack is Contributing Property of the Church Park Historic District , which was formed in November 1980.

The Historic Track was opened in 1838, making it the oldest US trotting track in use. Trotting races are held every year on the historic track . There are also training facilities and stables for trotting horses.

Harness Racing Museum

The museum building is made of half-timbering and was built as a stable in 1913. It houses works of art by well-known horse painters as well as exhibits related to the history of harness racing. The collection includes more than 1,700 paintings, lithographs and sculptures, around 20,000 photographs, as well as numerous racing addresses of trotting driverssulkies and other equipment for trotting. The exhibition is located in a historically preserved stable. The museum has a research library with over 4,000 books and videos on harness racing.

Harness Racing Hall of Fame

The Harness Racing Hall of Fame is attached to the museum. It includes several categories for horses and people, such as drivers, owners, and trainers. The three main categories are living people, living horses, and immortals. The winners in each category are inducted each year on Hall of Fame Day , the first Sunday in July. Proximity , Goldsmith Maid, and Hambletonian 10 were inducted into the Hall of Fame over time .
