General

The historical collections were created in 1901 with the establishment of the Berlin City Library (BStB) from valuable parts of the municipal library as well as from foundations, donations and purchases of libraries and bequests from important Berlin personalities. They are a mirror of Berlin's history and its urban-bourgeois culture. Until recently, collections that were created in Berlin and / or have a close content-related relationship with the city have been taken over and preserved by the ZLB in accordance with the provisions of its foundation law.

The Department of Historical Collections | Berlin Studies is integrated into a regional as well as international cooperation network.

In addition to the main tasks of maintaining the holdings and building new collections, the intention is to continue the project to search for cultural assets that have been confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution , in order to return these books to the previous owners or today's descendants, owners or heirs .
