The historic washing area is a building from the 19th century near Neuleiningen-Tal .

Building stock and history

It used to be a public facility of the Neuleiningen community for washing laundry. It is located in the Eckbachtal, about 500 m west of the end of the Neuleiningen valley, before the Eckbachweiher and is located south of the Eckbach on the local slope of the Bischofswald and on the northern edge of the Leininger spur . The Eckbach-Mühlenwanderweg leads past it.

Front wall with protective tunnels

The facility consists of a rectangular, stone, courtyard-like area built into the valley slope. On the broad side, towards the valley or towards the nearby Eckbach, it is open and there is the so-called Woog spring , which used to emerge here and also supplied the drinking water to the nearby Obermühle . This water was once used to operate the washing area . The spring has been covered with a well since 1950 . On the east and west side the square has rising quarry stone walls, which secure the slope on the right and left into which it is built. On the rear broad side (southern area) facing the slope there is a front wall approx. 6 m wide and 3.5 m high, which has a barrel-vaulted , brick-lined tunnel at its western corner , which was driven into the mountain and to protect the Washerwomen served in bad weather. The tunnel ceiling and the corner to the wall consist of large sand stone blocks . A simple, massive sandstone bench is placed at the rear end of the tunnel as a seat. The northern part of the washing area (towards the valley floor) was spanned around 1902 with a steel bridge over which the Grünstadt – Altleiningen railway ran from east to west . The bridge is still there, while the tracks that were on it were dismantled.

The washing area in its current form is likely to date from the early 19th century. Presumably the position served the same purpose before. Its historical or local historical value has been determined several times, even though it has not yet been included in the official monument topography . Among other things, a cycle path was planned on the route of the former railway line, with the renovated washing area being one of the tourist attractions. This has not yet been implemented and the facility is currently (2014) in a completely neglected, but structurally good condition.
