The Historic Red Building of Beijing University ( Chinese  北京大學紅樓  /  北京大学红楼 , Pinyin Běijīng Daxue Honglou , English Red Building of Beijing University ) on the "Street of the movement of the May Fourth" (Wusi dajie), Dongcheng District , centrally-administered city Beijing , People's Republic of China , is a historic building belonging to the Peking University . It was originally the university's first building.

In the summer of 1918 a four-storey building in the western style was completed, which was known as the "red building" ( honglou ) because of the red bricks and roof tiles used .

The building and its surroundings were the origin of the May Fourth Movement . On May 4, 1919 the students of Peking University here came before the Gate of Heavenly Peace (anmen Tian ') to protest and founded the movement of the fourth May The building and the square in front of it served as a starting point for revolutionary movements later on.

After 1918, Chen Duxiu , Li Dazhao , Lu Xun, and Hu Shi - the movement's eminent leaders and chief ideologues - were appointed professors there.

One floor of the building was the library, where Li Dazhao and Mao Zedong , among others , worked.

In April 2002, the New Culture Movement Museum ( Xin wenhua yundong jinianguan ) opened in the house.

The building has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Beijing (1–8) since 1961 .
