The multi-purpose cargo ship type UC-20 of the Hitachi Zosen ship assembly was built in 1977 in two units for the Hamburg shipping company Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL).

details

The ships, which were almost 162 meters long and 22.80 meters wide on frames, had four holds with an intermediate deck and a bulk cargo volume of 27,945 m 3 and a ball room of 26,873 m 3 . The built-in two-stroke main engine of the Hitachi-B & W 7K67 GF type developed around 9600 kW and allowed a speed of a little over 16 knots . The design of the ships with superstructures arranged aft and a loading gear consisting of four electrohydraulic 16-tonne ship's slewing cranes in Gemini design and a centrally positioned cambered heavy-lift boom with a load-bearing capacity of 180 tons did not differ fundamentally from contemporary Liberty replacement ships such as the Japanese type Freedom .

The type ship Tabora replaced the DAL training ship Taveta , which burned out in September 1975 . It was therefore equipped with additional accommodation and training facilities for 18 nautical and technical officer applicants and assistants and began its period of service under the German flag. The sister ship was laid down as Transkei , but renamed Talana and put into service. The Talana started sailing under the Singapore flag. Both UC-20 ships were renamed several times in the course of their service life, but remained in the service of the Deutsche Afrika-Linien / John T. Essberger shipping group throughout their careers. In 2001 both ships were sold to India for demolition.
