Hither Hills State Park is a state park in the area of the town of East Hampton in Suffolk County , New York . The park covers 1,755 acres (7.1 km²) on the east end of the South Fork of Long Island near the town of Montauk .

history

The area, which was later rededicated as Hither Hills State Park, was originally intended for private development and a leisure area with hotels, casinos, a polo field and a marina. This already planned development was blocked by the Long Island State Park Commission in the early 20th century and part of the private property was sold to New York State, which opened Hither Hills State Park in August. The area has long been the subject of legal battles, the Montauk Point Land Claims between the local Montauk Indians and the Long Island Sound Railroad .

geography

The park is on the South Fork of Long Island between Napeague and Montauk. Most of the State Park extends to Napeague Bay of Long Island Sound with dunes and coastal wetlands. The northeastern part is also designated as Hither Woods Preserve . In the east there are three other protected areas, some of which are co-managed by Hither Hils: Montauk Downs State Park , Camp Hero State Park and Montauk Point State Park .

The local area of Montauk is accessible via the Montauk Highway and the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road . The bus line 10C of the Suffolk County Transit also operates between East Hampton and Montauk, and the Long Iceland Railroad has on the track on the Amagansett , East Hampton and Montauk stations.

Freetime activities

The park has a bathing beach, picnic tables, a playground, as well as a nature trail, a bridle path and a campsite with 168 spaces. There are offers for recreation programs and opportunities for hunting, fishing and cross-country skiing in winter, as well as a kiosk.
