Hitomi Satō ( Japanese 佐藤 仁 美 , Satō Hitomi ; born December 23, 1997 ) is a Japanese table tennis player . In doubles, she won bronze at the 2019 World Championships and at the World Tour Grand Finals in 2016 and 2017.

Career

Hitomi Satō first appeared internationally in 2013 when she won the Thailand Junior & Cadet Open. In the world rankings it rose to number 279 the following month, after appearing on the World Tour it improved to number 170 within four months and moved into the top 100 for the first time six months later in April 2014. At the Russia Open 2014 she won her first adult World Tour medal when she won silver in doubles with Miyu Maeda ; At the end of the year she took part in the U-21 competition in the Grand Finals , but was eliminated in the group stage. In singles, her first medal was bronze at the Belarus Open 2015, at the Grand Finals this year she made it to the semi-finals as a U-21 player.

In 2016 she took part in 15 World Tour tournaments and qualified - this time in doubles and (just) in singles - for the Grand Finals . In the singles she was eliminated in the first round against the later tournament winner Zhu Yuling , in doubles with Honoka Hashimoto she reached the semifinals. After winning the Belarus and Thailand Open in March 2017, she moved into the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time. Her first adult tournament outside of the World Tour was the Asian Championships in April, where she was among the last 32 in singles, bronze in doubles and silver in the team. In 2017 she also took part in a world championship for the first time and was among the last 32 in singles. Thanks again to great activity - on the World Tour she played ten of twelve tournaments, in addition to five tournaments in the Challenge Series - she qualified again for the Grand Finals, in which she was eliminated in singles against Wang Manyu and in doubles with Honoka Hashimoto came into the semifinals. In 2018 she was not nominated for the Team World Cup, but played eleven of twelve World Tour tournaments (as well as five Challenge tournaments) and again took part in the singles and doubles in the Grand Finals, where she was eliminated in the first round .

The following year Satōs continued great activity, and it followed her next participation in World and Asian Championships; In both tournaments she reached the eighth finals in singles and in doubles in the semi-finals, and at the Asian Cup she also won silver with the team. She was also able to beat Olympic champion Ding Ning at both the Japan Open and the Grand Finals .

At the Qatar Open 2017, the duel between the defenders Hitomi Satō and Li Jie led to a rally that lasted more than ten minutes and was known as the "longest rally in modern TT history" to force the exchange method .
