Hlíðarfjall behind the sign |
When Hlíðarfjall is a 771 meter high volcanic mountain on lake Myvatn in the north-east of Iceland .
location
Hlíðarfjall is about 5 km north of the village of Reykjahlíð and another 5 km south of the caldera of the central volcano Krafla .
geology
The Hlíðarfjall belongs to the volcanic system of the nearby central volcano Krafla .
It is a conical lava dome with an attached lower ridge made of rhyolite rock, which was formed by prolonged or repeated crevice eruptions under a glacier from the Ice Age .
Two tectonic fissures, which can be traced back to the continental drift , stretch across the mountain, which lies in the middle of the Icelandic rift zone , dividing it into three parts with one higher and two lower peaks.
Hiking at Hlíðarfjall
You can go up the mountain from Reykjahlíð. The starting point of the marked hiking trail is the campsite north of the village. The trail partially follows the path that the lava flow took in 1729, which only just missed the place.
A longer tour on marked hiking trails leads from Leirhnjúkur in the Krafla Caldera down to Mývatn. You can partially circle the mountain and climb it.
