The . Church of St. Archangel Gabriel ( Serbian : Црква Светог арханђела Гаврила, Crkva Svetog arhanđela Gavrila) in the village of Veliki Radinci , Opština Sremska Mitrovica in Srem District , is a Serbian Orthodox church building in Vojvodina , northern Serbia .

The church, built in 1780, belongs to the Srem eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is dedicated to the Holy Archangel Gabriel . The church has an important cultural value for the Opština Sremska Mitrovica and thus also for the whole of Serbia.

The church is located in the eastern part of Veliki Radinci at the intersection of Ulica Moše Pijade , Osiječka Ulica and Rumska Ulica .

history

The Church of St. Archangel Gabriel was built in 1780. An older church stood in the same place. During the First World War , the church was damaged and had to be slightly renovated. 1944 was the Second World War, the baroque church of the Germans blasted to the Red Army and Tito - Partisans to leave no viewpoint, the church suffered considerable damage. At that time , almost all the church towers of the churches in Vojvodina from the Belgrade district of Zemun to Subotica were destroyed.

During the reconstruction of the church tower in socialist Yugoslavia , the height of the church tower was reduced. In addition, the church was newly plastered and equipped with a new roof.

2000 renovations were carried out on the church.

The church building was built in the Baroque style, with a single nave and an altar - apse on the east side and a magnificent Baroque church tower on the west side of the church. The church has simple arched windows and the facade is only lightly decorated. The facade is characterized by low skirting boards, these are adorned by vertical pilasters with decorated capitals . The church is plastered and has a gable roof .

The Church of St. Archangel Gabriel has a very important iconostasis . An unknown wood carver carved it with ornaments in the Baroque and Classicist style, it shows typical elements of the design of Orthodox churches at the end of the 18th century. Jakov Orfelin , one of the most famous and important Serbian artists of the last quarter of the 18th century, painted the icons in 1792. Even if Jakov Orfelin was a painter of the old Byzantine frescoes and icons, he also incorporated elements of classicism into the church .

The icons show in three rows the apostles , the crucifixion of Christ, Serbian Orthodox saints, Mary, the Mother of God, Jesus and the archangels Michael and Gabriel, who is the namesake of the church. The fresco of St. John the Baptist on the bishop's throne is particularly noteworthy here.
