The Chapel of St. Cross is in the Kreuzegg district of Pfronten . It is a branch of the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Pfronten-Berg.

history

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is documented for the first time through the church bill (saint bill) from 1674/75. However, it must be older. In 1675/76 it supposedly received a "new" altar. The location of the church outside the town center on the old country road from Kempten to Füssen is striking . In 1718/19 a cross was renovated here, which is believed to have given the church and the place its name. Kreuzegg is mentioned as a settlement as early as 1398.

construction

The Chapel of the Holy Cross was originally smaller. In 1744/45 it was extended by Johannes and Isaak Geisenhof by 12 shoes (approx. 3.50 m) and the side walls were bricked up to a height of 14 shoes (approx. 4.20 m). Whether the chapel already had its sacristy attached to the south cannot be proven, but a sign was attached to it to the north . It had to be demolished when the church was enlarged. In 1746/47 it is said that the bricklayer Burkard Jäger von Kreuzegg defied a completely new omen .

The nave with three window axes is closed on three sides in the chancel. The enlargement in 1744/45 also created space for a wooden gallery. The sloping ceiling at the side is lined with coffered wooden panels. On the steep gable roof there is an open roof turret with two small bells. In 1753/54, the blacksmith Christian Mayr received 1 guilder 13 Kreuzer from Heitlern for turning a gloggle and repairing the offering . Probably the other bell had to be replaced with a new one a year later. Because the old one was given for it, it only cost 36 guilders.

Furnishing

The baroque altar from around 1650 is attributed to the Pfronten carpenter Peter Babel (1601–1691) due to its stylistic features. In 1675/76 his son Nikolaus Babel earned 4 guilders for work on the altar. The changes must have been clearly visible, because the altar was now perceived as "new". In 1680/81 Nikolaus Babel received a further 4 guilders for two figures on the altar, probably for a St. Sebastian and St. Rochus in excerpt . These two figures were stolen in 1986 and then replaced by copies. The angel heads with hangers on the column shafts also come from Babel. The painter Rudolph Pösinger from Pfronten (1650–1698) also painted the altar in 1680/81 and received 43 guilders for it. Further repair work was then necessary in 1730/31. They were carried out by Bonaventura Stapf , who at that time also painted the chapel.

In the 18th century, many young bakers from the Allgäu worked in Rome. On his return in 1736/37, one of them brought a particle of the Holy Cross with him, which had been venerated in the Kreuzegger Chapel . For these cross particles Peter Heel made a tabernacle that Bonaventura Stapf took. The whole fitting came from the locksmith Christian Mayr. The tabernacle was later removed when the altar was changed again.

A crucifix forms the center of the altar. The two assistant figures, St. Mary and St. Johannes, must be ascribed to the Pfronten sculptor Martin Schneider (around 1608–1664). The crucified Christ belonging to the group now hangs on the side wall, while a crucifix by Franz Osterried (1808–1863) is now placed in the altar . On the side consoles there are figures of St. Peter and Paul, which were also probably created by Martin Schneiders.

The figurative decoration of the church is complemented by two Gothic statues, a majestic Mother of God with a child (around 1450) and a St. Anthony with a pilgrim's staff and bell and the pig as an attribute (around 1500).
