The elevated tank Kroatenberg is a listed elevated tank in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt . It served the Magdeburg drinking water supply .

location

The elevated tank is located on the Kroatenberg in the Friedenshöhe residential area in the south of Magdeburg's Sudenburg district, west of Aßmannstraße and south of Thomas-Müntzer-Straße .

Architecture and history

The tank was erected in 1867 on the Kroatenberg far south of Magdeburg's location at the time. This makes it one of the early buildings for the city's central drinking water supply. Fort III of the Magdeburg Fortress was previously located in this area . The elevated tank served as a compensation tank and storage tank for the water pumped from the Magdeburg waterworks on Wolfswerder south of Buckau , which was built in 1857 . The elevated tank was thus at a distance of almost five kilometers west of the waterworks.

The elevated tank was initially designed as an open basin with stepped stone masonry and earth fill. The clear dimension of the pool was 70 by 30 meters. In 1877, two brick-built chambers were added on either side of the original basin. At the same time, all basins were vaulted and covered with an embankment made of earth. In this context, two entry houses were built on the east side. They were made of ashlar with brick walls. In the period after 1900 a small ventilation tower with a tent roof was added.

As part of Magdeburg's water supply, the Kroatenberg elevated reservoir remained in operation until October 1996, when it was replaced by the Thauberg elevated reservoir.

In the local register of monuments , the tank is listed as a waterworks under registration number 094 71249 as a monument .

The elevated tank is an important testimony to the history of the drinking water supply in the city of Magdeburg.
