The Akkerboom farm is a listed building complex that was built in 1797/98 and was formerly used for agriculture in the Mettenhof district of Kiel . When the farm was about to be demolished in 1981 after the last users 'lease had expired, a citizens' initiative was founded , which in 1982 became the non-profit association Hof Akkerboom e. V. was established, which restored the courtyard and turned it into a district cultural center . The buildings find theater performances take place, as well as music and dance events. The rooms can also be rented for private events.

The thatched main building, the two barns and the paved courtyard are on the list of cultural monuments in Kiel-Mettenhof .

The farm's culture barn was destroyed by arson in 2002 and 2007 and then rebuilt. After the second fire, the original thatched roof was replaced by a zinc roof.

On the night of August 10, 2015, the main building burned to the ground due to a technical defect. According to the unanimous decision of the Kiel Council, the house was to be rebuilt, essentially with the historical exterior view. Reconstruction began in February 2017. The main building was officially reopened on March 21, 2018. Since then, a wide range of events has been running again, which is almost exclusively carried out by volunteer work.
