The Hofbräu AG Bamberg has long been the largest brewery in the Upper Franconian Bierstadt Bamberg . It was on Pödeldorfer Strasse; the buildings were demolished in 1982.

Brewery history

The brewery was founded by the brickworks owner and hops trader Simon Lessing , who had the "First Bamberg Export Beer Brewery Frankenbräu" entered in the commercial register on November 27, 1885 with a share capital of 1.1 million marks. Equipped with the most modern brewing machines, it quickly rose to become the largest brewery in Bamberg and achieved an annual output of 100,000 hectoliters. At the turn of the century the company operated under the name "Hofbräu AG Bamberg". The company experienced its decisive development into a brewery group after the First World War . As part of the expansion strategy, competing companies were taken over. B. Breweries in Haßfurt , Forchheim , Lichtenfels , Grafenwoehr and Weiden . The takeover of the Erlangener Brauhaus Erlwein & Schultheiß led to the brewery being run under the name "Hofbräu AG Bamberg und Erlangen" from 1919. Around 1925 around 500 employees produced an annual beer output of 280,000 hectoliters. With the seizure of power by the National Socialists first shadow fell on the economically successful brewery. The company was " Aryanized " in the course of bringing the supervisory board into line . Here also lost Willy Lessing , son of the founder, all equity shares.

After the Second World War , Hofbräu AG served the Allies as an army brewery and continued its successful corporate strategy. It was not until the 1970s that the second largest brewery in Upper Franconia got into turmoil after the majority owner had parted with his shares. The new owner was the Fürth Schickedanz Group, which incorporated the production facility into the Patrizierbräu AG brewery association. The decline in beer consumption soon led to plant closures, which also affected the Bamberg brewery. At the end of the 1977 calendar year, Patrizierbräu AG gave up beer production at the Bamberg location. Almost a hundred years after the company was founded, the brewery buildings were demolished. A little later, the general local health insurance fund and a residential area were built on the site.
