The Hoffa fat body ( corpus adiposum infrapatellare ) lies in the knee joint between the tibial head ( condylus tibiae ), the patella ligament ( ligamentum patellae ) and the lower edge of the kneecap (patella).

Like the entire interior of the capsule, it is covered by the outer skin of the joint ( membrana fibrosa ). The membrane is pre-booked at the level of the fat body in the direction of the joint cavity in the form of fat folds ( plicae alares ). The fat body reacts to all structural changes and infections in the internal joint with inflammatory hypertrophy ( Hoffa-Kastert syndrome ). If the damage persists, the fat changes fibrotically . Calcium deposits or ossification can follow later.
