life and work

Rolf Bertolini was born in Leipzig in 1927. The son of the businessman Wilhelm Bertolini attended the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium . From 1947 to 1952 he studied human medicine at the University of Leipzig . In 1952 he received his doctorate in Leipzig . After a year as a clinician, he turned to morphology . From 1953 to 1955 he worked as an assistant at the Anatomical Institute in Leipzig and from 1955 to 1956 at the Pathological Institute in Greifswald . He then returned to Leipzig and was habilitated here in 1959 under Kurt Alverdes (1896–1959) for the subject of anatomy .

After Alverdes' death in 1959, Rolf Bertolini initially took over the provisional management of the Anatomical Institute in Leipzig. In addition, between 1960 and 1961 he was director of the Anatomical Institute of the Medical Academy Magdeburg , where a pre-clinical course had also been set up from 1960. Once a week Bertolini and his assistants Joachim Fröhlich and W. Kirchner came to Magdeburg with models and teaching boards to give lectures to around 120 students. The double burden only changed when Martin Meyer was appointed to Magdeburg on September 1, 1961 . Bertolini was appointed director of the Anatomical Institute in Leipzig in 1961, which he headed until 1980. He was also Vice Dean for Student Affairs from 1967 to 1969 and Deputy Director for Education from 1969 to 1972. His pupil Joachim Fröhlich switched to the Magdeburg Anatomical Institute, which he temporarily headed after the death of Alfred Dorn in 1987. In 1980 Rolf Bertolini was appointed to the chair for anatomy at the Humboldt University in Berlin and was appointed director of the anatomical institute. His successor in Leipzig was Gerald Leutert (1929–1999). His student Dietmar Wendler (1935–2000) followed him to Berlin before he was appointed to the Magdeburg Medical Academy in 1988 . Bertolini headed the Berlin Institute until 1986. Scientifically, he dealt with a large number of embryological questions and worked on research topics on the female and male genitals. Rolf Bertolini died on April 1, 2006 in Leipzig.
