Hofgeismar Circle (Professors)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hofgeismarer Kreis was a discussion group formed in 1953 of America and reform-oriented West German and West Berlin university teachers and rectors. Named after its meeting place Hofgeismar , the district published a memorandum in 1956 after a series of biannual meetings with the title Thoughts on University Reform - Reorganization of the Faculty . In it, he advocated a functional tripartite division of university teaching staff into research, teaching and administrative staff for the first time, in a departure from the traditional unity of research and teaching , in order to better meet the challenge of the modern mass university .

Although this position was only shared by a minority within the university teaching staff at the time, the memorandum gained its importance because most of the members of the circle were rectors and thus had an influence on the opinion-forming of the West German Rectors' Conference . The considerations were also included in the deliberations of the Science Council founded in 1957 , especially after the appointment of "Hofgeismar" Ludwig Raiser as chairman of the council in 1961.
