Court Chamber (Habsburg Monarchy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The court chamber was in the Habsburg monarchy , the central fiscal authority to apply the expenses of court and the state of revenue and coverage.

Under Maximilian I , the financial administration for the Habsburg hereditary lands and the Holy Roman Empire was centralized in a court or treasury chamber, which was temporarily assigned to a general treasurer.

This authority was further reformed under Archduke Ferdinand and was able to establish itself in 1527 as a court chamber independent of the Reichshofrat . The Lower Austrian Chamber in Vienna , the Upper Austrian Chamber in Innsbruck , the Bohemian Chamber in Prague and the Hungarian Chamber in Pressburg , and after 1558 also the Silesian Chamber in Breslau, were subordinate to this authority . The Hofkammer was housed in the Imperial Chancellery wing of the Hofburg in Vienna.

Under Maria Theresa the court chamber was upgraded to the central financial authority of the monarchy, so that it was not only the highest authority for finance, but also responsible for trade, economy, mining and transport until the 19th century. It was not until 1848 that these competencies were divided between several newly created ministries.

The Hofkammer is the forerunner of today's Federal Ministry of Finance .
