The Hohenweidener See is located near Halle (Saale) near the Saale .

The name of the lake is derived from the nearby town of Hohenweiden in today's Saalekreis district . In the immediate vicinity is the Rattmannsdorfer See . Together, both lakes are also referred to as Rattmannsdorfer Ponds .

The Hohenweiden gravel pit was built in the 1960s and 1970s to extract the building material gravel for the construction of the nearby Buna works . The dismantling continued until about the mid-1970s. It is 3–4.5 m deep and has a water surface of approx. 21 ha.

Today the lake is used for sports and leisure activities (including water skiing) and as fishing waters.
