The Rattmannsdorfer See is located near Halle (Saale) near the Saale .

The name of the lake is derived from the nearby town of Rattmannsdorf in today's Saalekreis district . The Hohenweidener See is in the immediate vicinity . Together, both lakes are also referred to as Rattmannsdorfer Ponds .

The Rattmannsdorfer gravel pit was built in 1965 to extract the building material gravel for the construction of the nearby Buna works (chemical plant Buna II). The dismantling lasted until about 1975. The resulting lake is 3–6 m deep and has a water surface of approx. 77 ha. It is the second largest standing water in the area of Halle.

The new railway line Erfurt – Leipzig / Halle crosses the lake on the Saale-Elster valley bridge built between 2006 and 2012 , seven pillars of the bridge are in the lake. During the foundation work, the sea floor was heavily contaminated with mercury .

The Rattmannsdorfer See is used today for sport and leisure activities and as a fishing water. However, the fish are so contaminated with mercury that consumption or feeding is prohibited.
