Hoheria populnea ( common name in English Lacebark in Māori Houhere ) is a species of the genus Hoheria within the family of mallow (Malvaceae). It is based in New Zealand .

description

Hoheria populnea grows as an evergreen, branched shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 11 to 12 meters and a trunk diameter of up to 30 cm. Rapid growth occurs initially. The bark is light brown. The alternate arranged on the branches leaves are long stalks. The simple, dark green, glossy leaf blade is 6 to 10 cm long, narrowly ovate and toothed. There is no special youth form.

In the natural locations, the flowering period extends from February to April, i.e. in late summer and autumn. Five to ten flowers stand together in zymous inflorescences . The fragrant, hermaphrodite flowers are 2 to 2.5 cm in diameter and have radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are fused bell-shaped and end in five triangular calyx teeth. The five free petals are white. There are five, more rarely six styles.

Five or rarely six broadly winged fruits are formed per flower .

Occurrence

Hoheria populnea is native to New Zealand on the North Island north of the 38 ° south latitude. It thrives in light forests of the lowlands and open land at altitudes between sea level and up to 460 meters. It prefers to grow in good soil and tolerates poor locations.

Taxonomy

The first description of Hoheria populnea was made in 1839 by Allan Cunningham in Annals of Natural History , 3, 319. Some authors Hoheria sinclairii Hook. f. a synonym of Hoheria populnea A.Cunn.

use

Fibers can be extracted from the bark, which the Māori and early European settlers used to make cords, tote bags and headbands. The wood is used to make furniture.
