Hollow stone (near beeches)

The Hohle Stein near Buchen - Eberstadt is a stalactite cave several kilometers long . The cave in the shell limestone forms the "Eberstadt Cave Worlds" with the Eberstadt stalactite cave and the Kornäcker cave.

description

The entrance to the cave is about 750 meters south of the entrance to the Eberstadt stalactite cave on the Eberstadt - Seckach road . In a northerly direction it runs largely parallel to the show cave .

Shortly after the entrance, the cave divides into two corridors. The left passage ends after about 70 meters, the right passage narrows after about 50 meters to a 25 centimeter high gap, which only widens again after about 100 meters. In this area, the cross-section of the cave is elliptical, narrow and is sometimes below the karst water level , so that no access is then possible. There are hardly any stalactites to be found here.

This is followed by rooms with a height and width of up to 5 meters. They are replaced by sintering barriers that make access very difficult. In the rear of the cave there are large halls with stalactite formations. The largest of the halls, the so-called "Traumland-Dom", reaches a height of approx. 10 meters and a length of 25 meters. At the end of the measured route, the cross-section is still so large that it can be assumed that the entire course extends far to the north.

history

The existence of the cave has been known for a long time, the field name Hohler Stein is already mentioned in old maps. In 1953, the members of the "Association for Home and Cave Research" founded at the time began to make the cave accessible by removing the cave clay and building a wooden house above the entrance. Two corridors around 100 meters long were temporarily open to visitors. However, when it rained heavily, the cave was filled with water and clay, which had to be removed again and again. The effort required was out of proportion to the number of visitors, so the cave was closed again after a few years.

After the discovery of the Eberstadt stalactite cave, research was resumed in 1977. It was possible to overcome a bottleneck and measure a further 900 meters of the cave until massive sinter formation prevented further penetration. These could only be overcome in 1985. Until 2006 the Hohle Stein was explored at more than 3000 meters. The exploration is not yet completed, it is assumed a total length of 5000 meters.
