The Hokkaido ( Japanese 北海道 犬 , Hokkaidō inu / ken ) or Ainu ( ア イ ヌ 犬 , Ainu inu / ken ) is a Japanese dog breed recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 5, Section 5, Standard No. 261 ).

Origin and history

It is believed that this breed comes from medium-sized Japanese dogs that accompanied emigrants from Honshū to Hokkaidō in the Kamakura period ; at that time, traffic between Hokkaido and the Tohoku district was very strong. In addition to the name of its Hokkaido area of origin, which the breed has had since 1937, it is also referred to by the name Ainu-ken . The Ainu , the indigenous people of Hokkaido, bred these dogs to hunt bears and other game. The rugged nature of Hokkaido enables it to endure freezing cold and heavy snowfall. He reacts appropriately and is very resilient.

The breed was declared a "Monument to Nature" in 1937.
