Holger Böning

Holger Böning (born December 16, 1949 in Delmenhorst ) is a German media historian .

Holger Böning attended elementary school and completed an apprenticeship as a high-voltage electrician. He passed the Abitur at the Oldenburg College . From 1972 to 1978 he then studied German, history and education. In 1982 he received his doctorate from Hans-Wolf Jäger in Bremen with a thesis on public enlightenment in Switzerland. In 1987 he became a research associate at the German press research department at the University of Bremen . His habilitation took place in 1991 with a thesis on the press and commercial literature of the German Enlightenment. Böning is Professor of Modern German Literature and History of the German Press at the Institute for German Press Research at the University of Bremen. He is co-editor of the yearbook for communication history .

His main research interests are German and Swiss history, literature and the press, the Enlightenment in German-speaking countries, the history of political song and poetry. For his work on the periodical press of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg from the beginning until 1815, Böning was awarded the Lappenberg Medal in 2005 by the Association for Hamburg History .
