The Holland- class was a class of six armored cruisers belonging to the Koninklijke Navy of the Netherlands .

Construction history

The model for the Holland class was the British Apollo class . The first three ships ( construction lot 1) had a standard displacement of 3,900 t, were 93.3 m long, 14.8 m wide and had a draft of 5.41 m. The following three ships (construction lot 2) were 94.7 m long, which increased the displacement to 4,033 t. The shipyards for two ships each were the Rijkswerf in Amsterdam , the NV Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde in Vlissingen and the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij in Rotterdam .

Machine system

The Holland- class propulsion system consisted of two three-cylinder compound steam engines with triple steam expansion , each of which drove the two screws via a drive shaft. The machines developed 10,000 hp (approx. 7,500 kW). This enabled a top speed of up to 20 kn (about 37 km / h) to be achieved. 875 t of coal could be stashed, with which a range of 4,500 nm could be achieved at 9.7 kn .

Armor

The Holland- class had 5 cm thick armor . In addition, the guns were equipped with a 13 mm thick shield. The bridge superstructures were armored up to 100 mm thick.

Armament

The naval artillery of the Holland class consisted of two 15-cm guns, six 12-cm guns, four 7.6-cm guns and four 1-pfd-guns. These were all set up individually. In addition, two torpedo tubes with a diameter of 45 cm were available.

Successor class

In the 1950s, a new class of destroyer was again called the Holland class . The four ships of the class were named Holland (D808), Zeeland (D809), Noord-Brabant (D810) and Gelderland (D811).
