Holyrood ( Scottish Gaelic Taigh an Ròid , Scots Halyruid ) is a district of the Scottish capital Edinburgh . It connects to the city center directly at the end of the Royal Mile in the east.
The Canons of Holyrood Abbey ( Abbey of the Holy Cross , "holy rood") was built in 1128 by King David I, but far outside of the then city of Edinburgh. The city of Canongate was located between Edinburgh and Holyrood Abbey . (The “canon” in their name means canons.)
Holyrood is known as the site of Holyrood Palace , the residence of the British Queen in Scotland.
A modern parliament building was erected here for the Scottish Parliament , and now Parliament is also simply referred to in the press as Holyrood , analogous to Westminster for Parliament in London. Parliament is located between Calton Hill with the government buildings ( St. Andrew's House on Regent Road) and the large Holyrood Park .
See also Arthur’s Seat . Holyrood Park is at the foot of this mountain.
