The timber house Z8 (also timber house Lindenau ) is a five-storey residential and commercial building in solid wood construction in Leipzig-Lindenau . It was built in 2018 by the private builders' association Z8 GbR and received several architecture prizes .

location

The property of the house is at the confluence of Felsenkellerstraße and Zschochersche Straße, which forms an acute angle of 36 degrees. The triangular area created in this way measures 42 meters on the long sides and 28 meters on the narrow side. In the Zschocherschen Strasse, the property would be number 8, which is why the Z8 building association called itself that. Because of its access in Felsenkellerstraße, it was given the address Felsenkellerstraße 1.

The surrounding area is characterized by multi-storey residential development, predominantly in a closed block- edge construction. The location is busy. The tram goes through Zschochersche Strasse. At the level of the property, Kösener Strasse joins Felsenkellerstrasse from the west and Erich-Zeigner-Allee joins Zschochersche Strasse.

history

Facade to Zschocherschen Strasse (2021)
Saxon State Prize for Building Culture 2019 for the timber house Leipzig-Lindenau (2019)

During the Nazi era , the corner property was shared by a car rental company based on the neighboring property on Zschocherschen Strasse. Then there was a gas station on it until 1961. After a fallow location , there was finally a fenced-in garden.

The wooden house was planned by the architect Dirk Stenzel (ASUNA, atelier for strategic and sustainable architecture, Leipzig) , who is also one of the builders. After a lengthy planning and approval phase due to the special fire protection, construction of the house began in 2016. The base plate is made of concrete, as are the stairs and elevator shaft. Around the latter, four carpenters from a Torgau carpentry shop built the shell of the house with prefabricated wooden parts in just five weeks. These parts were supplied by the Stora Enso Group's sawmill in Ybbs on the Danube in Austria .

The topping-out ceremony took place on March 31, 2017 , and the first users moved in at the end of 2017. The construction costs amounted to 2.5 million euros.

The Z8 wooden house was awarded both the Saxon State Prize for Building Culture and the City of Leipzig Architecture Prize in 2019. It also received third prize at the KfW Construction Award 2019 in the new construction category.

The theme of the Saxon State Prize for Building Culture 2019 was "Sustainably into the future". In the reason for awarding the award to the Z8 wooden house, the jury determined the sustainability of the building, among other things, in the following aspects: Use of the renewable raw material wood as a construction and design material, short construction time due to prefabrication of the building elements, use of renewable energies (solar and geothermal energy ), Reduction of water consumption through the use of rainwater as process water and the urban climate regulation function through the roof gardens.

description

Courtyard side (2021)

The 19.5 meter high five-storey building does not take up the entire front of Zschocherschen Strasse; the southern quarter is only two storeys high. After Felsenkellerstraße, a 16-meter-long courtyard area with parking spaces remains free. At the northern end, a girder supports the building, creating an open passage.

The elements of solid wood construction consist of crosswise glued, 16 to 24 cm thick plywood board for outer walls and the ceiling as well as with parallel fiber direction glued laminated wood for the post and beam construction. Around 540 m³ of wood were used for the shell and facade. Non-load-bearing metal stud interior walls on load-bearing ceilings made of cross-laminated timber enable individual room cuts, with the installations being laid under the plasterboard cladding . The rooms have underfloor heating .

The outer skin of the building is a pre-greyed cladding made of Siberian larch wood with horizontal aluminum strips and rails to guide the aluminum sliding shutters for the windows. The house has two geothermal heat pumps , solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system. The roof garden is shared.

A 430 square meter store for ergonomic office equipment is located on the ground floor and first floor. The three upper floors above contain four apartments with areas of 120 to 195 square meters.
