The wood painting is an ornament of small objects made of wood , such as boxes, frames and plates , by painting replacement figures, flowers, counterfeiting of inlays , etc.

Ordinary watercolors are used for this, after the wooden ground has been sanded down with glass paper and soaked in a solution of a little gelatine in warm water . Finally, the finished work is covered with a layer of watercolor varnish or transparent wood varnish. Shellac used to be used for this .

Gouache paints are used for dark woods .

For larger wooden objects, oil painting on a polished or matt background is recommended . Gold bronze or gold leaf can also be used advantageously on a matt background .
